Guercino

Italian, 1591–1666

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591–1666), known as Guercino, was an Italian Baroque painter and draftsman born in Cento, Emilia. He began as a largely self-taught artist and apprenticed at age sixteen. Guercino’s early works were marked by energetic naturalism, while his later paintings showed a more classical balance. He was active in both Rome and Bologna, and his drawings were recognized for their brightness and dynamic style.
