French, 1877–1953
Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was a French artist linked to the Fauvist movement. He became known for his colorful and decorative style, which appeared in paintings, textile patterns, and public building decorations. Dufy often depicted outdoor social events and also worked in drawing, printmaking, book illustration, scenic and furniture design, and public space planning. Born in Le Havre, he began art studies as a teenager and later developed a distinctive technique using quick, thin washes of color and foreshortened perspective.
