Abraham van (I) Strij Bovendeurstuk met allegorie op de stad Dordrecht DM 017 1188 Dordrechts Museum — History & Facts
A crown hovers over an empty escutcheon, flanked by two children who seem to have stepped out of a stone relief and into a dream. The artist, Abraham van Strij (I), crafts a scene where allegory is made flesh: one child, spear in hand and crowned with laurel, gazes with the composure of authority, while the other, holding a mirror and keys, looks downward as if weighing the burdens of self-knowledge and guardianship. The book at their feet opens toward the viewer, inviting contemplation of wisdom or law, while a putto above leans over a swirling volute, watching the tableau unfold.
The entire composition is rendered in a restrained palette, mimicking the cool clarity of carved stone, and the play of light across the figures’ limbs and faces gives them a presence that is both sculptural and alive. This kind of allegorical scene, with its classical motifs and emblematic objects, belongs to a tradition that flourished in the Netherlands in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Artists like van Strij were often called upon to create such images for civic buildings or as overdoor decorations, celebrating the virtues or identity of a city—in this case, Dordrecht. The empty shield at the center is a silent invitation: it could once have borne a coat of arms, or perhaps it was always meant to suggest the city’s openness to new glory.
Housed today in the Dordrechts Museum, this work is a reminder of a time when art, architecture, and civic pride were woven together in a single, thoughtful image—one that still asks the viewer to decode its symbols and imagine the city it honors.
