Cart with Black Ox — History & Facts
A black ox stands harnessed to a heavy wooden cart under a gray sky, while crows fly overhead and peck at the ground. Vincent van Gogh painted it in Nuenen, in the Netherlands, in July 1884, in the dark, earthy colors of his Dutch years. Writing to his brother Theo around 20 July 1884, he described his latest works as two rather large studies of ox-carts, one with a black ox and one with a red-and-white ox. The painting came to the Portland Art Museum as a gift from Fred and Frances Sohn. It is in Portland, Oregon.
