Thatched Cottages at Cordeville — History & Facts

A cluster of thatched cottages stretches across the center of the scene, their pale stone walls and steep, textured roofs rendered in thick, swirling strokes of paint. The rooftops are covered in layers of green and ochre, with each blade of thatch suggested by energetic, directional brushwork. At the right, a tall chimney rises from the nearest cottage, its stonework picked out in creamy yellow and blue-grey, while small windows beneath hint at the lives within.

A tangle of green foliage and climbing plants spills over the garden walls and up the facades, softening the boundary between house and landscape. Low stone walls and a wooden fence run horizontally across the foreground and left, enclosing a patchwork of kitchen gardens and grassy banks. Behind the buildings, a dense mass of trees and bushes fills the middle ground, their rounded forms built up with short, looping strokes in deep greens and olive.

Above, the sky is alive with swirling clouds and bands of blue, the paint laid on in thick, rhythmic waves that echo the movement of the trees below. Every surface is animated by van Gogh's brushwork, which creates a sense of restless energy and movement throughout the landscape. The lower edge of the painting features a winding, pale path bordered by rough, blue-grey lines indicating stones or paving.

To the left, a terraced stone wall is topped with a row of small bushes or shrubs, each defined by quick, circular brushstrokes. Near the center, the thick green foliage partially obscures a small, rectangular window, its white frame outlined in blue. In the far right, the edge of another building is visible, its triangular roof rendered in muted grey and green.

Throughout the scene, the paint is applied in dense, textured layers, with visible ridges and grooves that catch the light and enhance the sense of depth.
