Chestnut Trees in Blossom — History & Facts

A group of chestnut trees, thick with fresh green leaves and yellow-white blossoms, dominates the right side of the composition. The trees are rendered with energetic, rhythmic brushstrokes, each mark distinct and directional, creating a sense of movement in the foliage. Bright dashes of yellow and white punctuate the green canopy, suggesting the chestnut flowers catching the light.

Beneath the trees, a trio of figures in hats and long dresses stands in conversation, their forms simplified and outlined in dark paint. To the left, a single figure in a green suit and red hat walks along a sunlit path, casting a faint shadow on the yellow ground. The street curves diagonally through the foreground, its surface painted with sweeping strokes of pale yellow and green, leading the viewer’s gaze toward the houses in the background.

A row of houses with red roofs and white walls lines the left edge of the scene, their windows and doors picked out in red and green. The sky above is a deep, swirling blue, streaked with darker tones that echo the restless energy of the trees below. The overall palette is vivid, dominated by greens and yellows, with accents of red, blue, and white, creating a lively and saturated effect.

The brushwork is thick and expressive, with visible texture and impasto in the leaves and blossoms, characteristic of Vincent van Gogh’s late style. A low stone wall painted in green and yellow occupies the bottom right corner, with angular shadows cast onto the pavement beside it. In the lower left, the sunlit ground is broken by a patch of blue-green shadow that extends toward the walking figure.

Near the base of the trees, a curved iron fence or railing is visible, rendered in dark green, partially enclosing the group of three figures. The upper left corner of the sky is lighter, with swirling, textured strokes of white and pale blue contrasting with the darker blue above the trees. On the far right, a yellow post or bollard stands at the edge of the path, its surface catching the sunlight and casting a deep green shadow behind it. The painting is reproduced here from an artbook, as noted in the source information.
