Crucifixion — History & Facts
Three crosses rise against a darkened sky, with Jesus Christ at the center, flanked by two thieves whose bodies twist in agony. At the foot of the central cross, a dense crowd of soldiers, horsemen, and mourners fills the lower half of the panel, their armor and helmets rendered in sharp gold and black lines. To the left, a group of women in flowing red and blue robes, some with golden halos, cluster in sorrow, one collapsing into the arms of her companions.
On the right, mounted soldiers in ornate attire gesture and point, while a group kneels to cast lots for Christ’s garments, their hands reaching over a pink cloak spread on the ground. The composition is tightly packed, with overlapping figures and vivid, angular drapery that creates a sense of movement and urgency. Giotto uses bold, flat areas of color—especially bright reds, deep blues, and shimmering gold—to distinguish groups and heighten the emotional contrasts.
The paint surface appears smooth, with delicate lines defining faces and hands, and subtle shading modeling the bodies and folds of cloth. Details such as the intricate patterns on the soldiers’ tunics and the filigree halos are picked out with fine, precise brushwork. Jagged, grey mountains fill the background beneath the crosses, separating the crowded foreground from the stormy, deep blue sky above.
A red standard bearing a gold emblem is held aloft by a mounted soldier near the center, its bright color standing out against the muted landscape. The lower corners of the panel show worn paint and exposed wood, and the gold border along the top edge is chipped and irregular in places. Crucifixion is painted by Giotto di Bondone in the 1330s, during the period known as the Proto-Renaissance. The subject is religious, depicting the death of Jesus Christ, a central theme in Christian art of the era.
