Don Juan Mateos — History & Facts
A man stands cut off below the waist, turned slightly to his left but facing forward, his gaze direct and intense. His head is strongly illuminated, the light picking out his broad forehead, arched brows, and the shadowed lines around his mouth and cheek. He wears a dark garment with a high, open white collar that frames his neck and chin.
Both hands are rendered with minimal detail, their forms suggested rather than fully painted. The figure emerges against a reddish-gray background that grows brighter around the sitter, creating a subtle halo effect. The sitter's expression is stern, his lips pressed together and his eyes set beneath heavy brows.
The brushwork in the face is smooth and precise, while the clothing and background show broader handling and softer transitions. The upper left corner of the painting is filled with a deep, nearly black shadow that contrasts with the lighter area around the figure's head and shoulders. A faint highlight runs along the sitter’s right shoulder, suggesting the fall of light from the left side of the composition.
The background is featureless, with no visible objects or architectural elements, and transitions smoothly from dark at the edges to a muted, warm tone near the figure. The paint application on the coat’s sleeves and chest is loose and textured, with visible brush marks suggesting folds and volume in the fabric. The work is widely attributed to Velázquez and has been dated to between circa 1632 and circa 1634. The source description refers to it as a portrait of Juan Mateos.
The Yorck Project includes this painting in its collection of 10,000 masterworks of painting.
