Esquisse pour l'escalier des Fêtes de l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris , Gémeaux — History & Facts
The eye is drawn at once to the cool blue medallion at the heart of this composition, where two figures—twins, perhaps, or companions—stand with a horse, their forms rendered in the pale, almost ghostly tones of cameo relief. This central scene feels like a memory from antiquity, glimpsed through the haze of time. Around them, the artist has set a border of oak leaves and delicate pink blossoms, a garland that both frames and softens the geometry.
In the upper corners, branches heavy with yellow fruit and curling leaves push outward, each enclosing a roundel: one marked with mysterious letters, the other with a wheel, hinting at symbols or allegories just out of reach. The palette is restrained, the forms precise, but the effect is quietly lush, inviting the viewer to linger and decode. Works like this, created between 1888 and 1898, belong to a moment when artists such as Luc-Olivier Merson were tasked with designing not just paintings but entire environments—murals, decorative schemes, and architectural embellishments for grand civic spaces. The Hôtel de Ville de Paris, for which this esquisse was conceived, was itself a symbol of the city’s rebirth and ambition after the turmoil of the 19th century.
Such designs were meant to elevate public life, weaving together references to mythology, nature, and civic pride. While history has kept few traces of the fate of every preparatory sketch, this piece survives in the Paris Musées collection, a fragment of the era’s grand decorative dreams. Look again at the medallion: what story do you imagine the twins are telling?
