Houses at Argenteuil — History & Facts

A wide meadow dotted with yellow and red flowers stretches across the foreground, its surface animated by loose, flickering brushstrokes that suggest the play of sunlight on grass and petals. Three houses with red-tiled roofs stand in a row beyond the field, their pale facades set against a backdrop of trees and a distant church spire that rises above the horizon at the center. The houses are painted with quick, visible strokes, and their doors and windows are picked out in darker tones, while small green plants or vines climb up their walls.

To the right, a figure appears in the garden beside the largest house, accompanied by a smaller form that may be a child or animal, both rendered with a few swift marks. Young trees with slender trunks and sparse leaves stand in front of the houses, their foliage painted in dabs and streaks that catch the light and suggest a gentle breeze. Above, the sky is filled with shifting clouds, painted in broad, textured sweeps of white, grey, and blue, casting a variable light that brightens the field and leaves the houses partly in shadow.

The composition is anchored by the central path leading from the meadow toward the middle house, drawing the viewer's gaze through the scene and into the distance. The artist signs his name in the lower right corner, the script standing out against the green and yellow of the grass. In the lower left corner, the edge of a fourth building with a red roof is just visible, cropped by the frame.

Soft blue and lavender shadows fall across the left sides of the houses, contrasting with the sunlit areas on their right facades and roofs. The sky transitions from a bright blue at the upper left to a darker, cloudier grey at the upper right, suggesting a change in weather. Along the bottom edge, the paint is applied in thicker, more textured dabs, especially in the yellow and green areas of the meadow.

Faint, irregular lines of brown and green mark the boundaries between the grassy field and the gardens in front of the houses.
