Landscape with three cows and a cowherd — History & Facts
The first thing that draws the eye in Landscape with three cows and a cowherd is the vastness of the sky, dwarfing the animals and their keeper beneath its rolling clouds. Light pours in from the left, gilding the backs of the reclining cows and catching the edge of the cowherd’s hat as he rests in the grass. The standing black cow, alert and almost monumental, anchors the scene, while the other two melt into the earth, their bodies echoing the gentle rise of the distant hills.
The tower on the horizon is just a suggestion, a reminder of human presence in a world ruled by nature’s rhythms. Even the flight of birds high above seems to pause, suspended in the hush of a summer afternoon. Painted sometime between 1635 and 1691, this work belongs to the golden age of Dutch landscape painting, when artists like Aelbert Cuyp found poetry in the everyday. Such scenes were prized by prosperous Dutch citizens who sought to bring the calm and order of the countryside into their homes.
Collectors valued these paintings not only for their beauty, but for the sense of stability and abundance they promised—a world where man and beast could rest together in peace. Now held in the Erfgoed Rijssen-Holten collection (art-work number ERH015000349), this painting survives as a quiet testament to a time when the ordinary was worth lingering over. The next time you look, follow the line of the cowherd’s gaze and see where it leads you.
