Large still life with lobster — History & Facts
A curtain swept aside reveals a banquet that seems to teeter between abundance and chaos. The eye is drawn first to the vivid red lobster, its claws splayed atop a mound of grapes and peaches, as if it has just landed or is about to be snatched away. Around it, the table is crowded with gleaming vessels, a nautilus shell cup, and a glass half-filled with wine, each surface catching the light in a different way.
The drapery—both above and below—billows and folds, leading the gaze in and out of shadow, suggesting movement and the fleeting nature of such luxury. The melon, just sliced, and the scattered oysters hint at a meal interrupted, or perhaps the moment before the guests arrive. Painted in 1653, Large still life with lobster by Abraham van Beyeren belongs to the world of Dutch Golden Age still life, where painters turned the bounty of trade and the rituals of dining into a theater of objects. These lavish compositions were often commissioned by wealthy merchants eager to display both their taste and their prosperity, and the genre became a showcase for technical skill: the glint of silver, the translucence of grapes, the play of light on velvet and glass.
While little is recorded about the journey of this particular painting, it is documented in Marcus Dekiert’s survey of 17th-century Dutch and German painting at the Alte Pinakothek. In works like this, the painter’s hand lingers on every texture, inviting us to consider both the pleasures and the vanities of earthly delights—look again at the lobster, and see how it commands the stage.
