Nude Sitting on a Divan — History & Facts
When Nude Sitting on a Divan was first exhibited in Paris in 1917, police arrived to shut down the show, scandalized by the frank sensuality of Amedeo Modigliani’s nudes. The gallery owner, Léopold Zborowski, was forced to hang a curtain in the window to prevent passersby from glimpsing the paintings. This moment marked one of the rare occasions in early twentieth-century art when the authorities intervened directly in a modernist exhibition, highlighting the shock these works provoked in their time.
The controversy cemented Modigliani’s reputation as a daring and uncompromising artist. The painting captures a woman seated on a divan, her body relaxed yet alert, gazing directly at the viewer. Modigliani chooses an intimate, unidealized moment: the model’s elongated torso and neck, signature features of his style, lend her a statuesque presence, while her direct gaze and parted lips suggest both vulnerability and confidence. The background is spare, drawing all attention to the sitter’s flesh tones and the subtle play of shadow across her body.
Unlike the classical nudes of Ingres or Titian, Modigliani’s figure is not adorned with allegorical attributes or mythological context; instead, the emphasis is on the individuality and humanity of the model herself. Painted during Modigliani’s brief but intense period of nude portraits, Nude Sitting on a Divan is one of a celebrated series created in 1917, all commissioned by Zborowski. The exact medium is uncertain, though most of Modigliani’s nudes from this period are oil on canvas. Many of these works remained in private hands for decades, occasionally surfacing in exhibitions that traced the development of Modigliani’s unique vision.
Today, the painting stands as a testament to the artist’s radical approach to the nude, bridging the traditions of the past with the boldness of modernism, and continues to provoke discussion about the boundaries of art and propriety.
