Philip IV in old age — History & Facts
A man with pale skin and shoulder-length, light brown hair stands turned slightly to his left, but his gaze meets the viewer directly. His face is marked by a prominent nose, a full mustache that curves upward at the ends, and a small, pointed beard at his chin. He wears a stiff, white collar that sharply frames his neck and contrasts with the dark, voluminous garment covering his shoulders and chest.
The garment, rendered in broad, loose brushstrokes, appears almost sculptural in its heavy folds and subtle highlights, with the paint catching the light on the upper chest and shoulders. The background is a deep, nearly black space, interrupted only by two vertical bands of muted grey that rise behind the sitter’s head and right shoulder, suggesting the edge of a wall or panel. Soft light falls from the left, illuminating the sitter’s forehead, nose, and the right side of his face, while gentle shadows model the hollows of his cheeks and under his chin.
The sitter’s expression is reserved and dignified, his lips closed and his brow relaxed, yet his eyes hold a trace of melancholy or fatigue. The artist’s brushwork is especially visible in the handling of the hair and the garment, where loose, confident strokes describe texture and volume without excessive detail. No secondary figures or objects are present within the composition, emphasizing the isolation of the sitter.
The lower left and right corners of the canvas display small painted numbers in red and yellow, respectively, which stand out against the dark background. The edges of the sitter's garment dissolve into the shadowy background, with the left shoulder nearly blending into the darkness. The background is painted with flat, opaque strokes, and the vertical bands behind the sitter are subtly uneven in width and tone.
Light reflects faintly off the sitter’s upper lip and the tip of his nose, while the left side of his face and garment remain largely in shadow, creating a strong contrast across the figure.
