Portrait of Agnolo Doni — History & Facts

Agnolo Doni sits in three-quarter view, his body turned slightly to the left while his gaze meets the viewer directly. He wears a black doublet over a vivid red garment, the sleeves full and voluminous, with a delicate white collar peeking out at the neck. His long brown hair falls to his shoulders beneath a soft black cap, framing a face that is both youthful and serious.

Doni’s right hand rests on a wooden ledge, fingers elegantly extended and adorned with two rings, while his left hand is placed gently atop his right wrist. The background opens onto a serene landscape, where rolling green fields and distant blue hills recede beneath a sky dotted with a few rounded clouds. Soft, even light washes over the figure, illuminating the textures of skin, hair, and fabric, and casting subtle shadows that model the forms.

The brushwork is smooth and precise, with careful transitions between light and shadow, and the paint surface reveals fine cracks from age. The composition is balanced, with Doni’s figure centrally placed and his arms forming a stable triangular shape that anchors him within the frame. Small details, such as the gold clasps at his collar and the reflections on his rings, are rendered with meticulous attention.

The low horizon of the landscape allows the figure to dominate the composition, while the uniform light brings out the volumes and surfaces of his face and clothing. Portrait of Agnolo Doni was created by Raphael between 1505 and 1506, during the artist’s early maturity.
