Rape of Europa — History & Facts
A white bull occupies the foreground, its body stretching horizontally across the lower part of the scene, with a richly dressed woman seated on its back. The woman wears a gold and rose gown with elaborate folds, her head tilted upward and her gaze turned to the sky, while her right hand clutches the bull's neck. To her left, a figure in blue leans in, extending an arm to support her, and another woman in a red robe stands behind, reaching forward with both hands raised.
On the far left, a young woman in a yellow garment stretches her arms toward the central group, and a dog stands at her feet, its head turned toward the bull. Behind the main figures, two tall trees frame the composition, their trunks and leaves creating a dark border that contrasts with the blue and white sky. In the background, a procession of figures and animals appears on a strip of land, including a woman riding another white bull and several children or putti, one of whom holds a flower garland.
The landscape opens to a distant view with trees and a calm body of water, painted in soft greens and blues. Light falls from the upper left, illuminating the central figures and highlighting the sheen of their garments, the bull’s white hide, and the gold embroidery of a draped mantle. Veronese uses broad, fluid brushstrokes in the fabrics and foliage, with delicate touches for jewelry, flowers, and facial features.
The composition is carefully balanced, with the group of women and the bull forming a sweeping diagonal from lower left to upper right, echoed by the arrangement of trees and clouds. Small details, such as the red sandals on the woman’s feet, the string of pearls around her neck, and the patterned cloth over the bull's back, add texture and richness to the scene. Paolo Veronese paints this scene in the 1580s, depicting Europa and the bull as specified in the genre of mythological painting.
