S/S "Amerika" — History & Facts
What first catches the eye in S/S "Amerika" is the ship’s proud procession across a restless sea, its hull slicing through the waves with an air of certainty. The artist, Antonio Jacobsen, gives the vessel a heroic presence, stretching it almost the full width of the canvas, while the low horizon lets the sky loom vast and changeable above. Flags snap sharply from every mast and spar, each one a coded signal of identity and allegiance: the Danish ensign at the stern, the American flag forward, and the ship’s name streaming in red.
The white sails, though partly furled, billow against the muted sky, and a stream of black smoke trails from the funnel, marking the transition from sail to steam. The palette is cool and bracing, dominated by the greens and greys of the Atlantic, with the ship’s crisp lines and bright highlights standing out against the churning water. This is a portrait not just of a ship, but of an era in flux—when steamships like the Amerika, built in 1872 by Harland & Wolff and later sailing for the Danish Thingvalla Steamship Company, carried hopes and cargoes across the ocean. Marine paintings of the late nineteenth century were often commissioned by shipping lines or captains eager to commemorate their vessels, and Jacobsen was renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture both the individuality of a ship and the broader drama of maritime travel.
Painted in 1894, as recorded in the collection of bruun-rasmussen.dk, this work stands at the intersection of old and new worlds, both in its subject and its style. The viewer is left to imagine the lives and stories contained within those decks, and to trace the journey of this ship across both canvas and history.
