Saint Anthony Abbot and St. Paul, the first hermit — History & Facts
A black-robed figure with a white beard sits on the left, gesturing with his right hand while holding a staff in his left, his gaze turned toward another elderly man seated beside him. The second man, dressed in a pale, rough garment, clasps his hands together and looks upward, his expression intent and absorbed. Between them, the ground is scattered with plants and rocks, and behind them rises a massive ochre cliff, its surface brushed with loose, energetic strokes that suggest rough stone.
Above the two saints, a raven descends from the sky, its wings outstretched and its beak holding a round loaf of bread, poised to deliver it onto the rock. A large tree at the right frames the scene, its trunk twisting upward and its branches rendered with quick, transparent touches of paint that let the sky shimmer through the leaves. The sky itself is turbulent, filled with swirling clouds in tones of blue, gray, and cream, painted with sweeping, visible brushstrokes that lend the air a sense of movement and drama.
In the background, a winding river valley stretches toward distant mountains, rendered in cool, misty hues that recede into the distance. The composition is anchored by the vertical mass of the rock and tree, while the figures are arranged in a gentle arc at the lower center, their gestures and glances leading the viewer’s attention upward toward the raven. The color palette is dominated by earthy browns, olive greens, and muted blues, with the pale flesh tones of the saints standing out against the darker landscape.
The brushwork varies from fine detail in the faces and hands to broader, more fluid strokes in the foliage and sky, creating a lively surface texture. Saint Anthony Abbot and St. Paul, the first hermit was painted by Diego Velázquez around 1634.
