Still life with fruit and a beaker on a cock's foot — History & Facts
A golden beaker perched on a fantastical cock’s foot presides over this lavish still life, its gleaming surface catching the faintest glimmers of light. The eye is first drawn to the curling lemon peel, a spiral of bright yellow against the deep shadow, then led across a bounty of grapes, peaches, and split pomegranates tumbling from a blue-and-white Wan Li dish. Each object is rendered with almost miraculous clarity: the delicate translucence of grape skins, the rough pitted rind of citrus, and the glint of wine in a roemer glass.
Look closer, and the scene teems with quiet life—a snail glides among the fruit, butterflies rest on curling leaves, and a beetle lingers near the window, each creature a reminder that even abundance is fleeting. The composition is a careful dance of opulence and decay, the light carving out textures and forms from the enveloping darkness. Works like this, painted by Abraham Mignon between 1660 and 1679, belong to the world of the Dutch Golden Age, when still lifes were prized for both their beauty and their moral lessons. Such paintings adorned the homes of prosperous merchants, who saw in them both a celebration of worldly success and a gentle warning about its impermanence.
The Wan Li porcelain signals global trade, the exotic fruit and costly vessels a testament to the reach of Dutch commerce, while the insects and overripe fruit hint at the passage of time and the certainty of decline. This canvas, now in the Rijksmuseum, stands as a window onto an era obsessed with both collecting and contemplating the riches of the world—inviting us, centuries later, to linger over every detail and consider what endures.
