Still Life with Jars — History & Facts
In the winter of 1884, Vincent van Gogh was still living in the Dutch village of Nuenen, wrestling with his craft and the muted palette of the northern countryside. Still Life with Jars belongs to this formative period, when the artist was producing studies of humble objects in preparation for his first major work, The Potato Eaters. What makes this painting especially intriguing is that it marks van Gogh’s early experiments with the still life genre, a practice he would later transform with his explosive color in Paris.
Here, however, he is still under the spell of Dutch masters and the somber earth tones of his environment. The painting captures a quiet moment: a cluster of earthenware jars, bottles, and perhaps a tin or two, arranged on a simple wooden table. The objects are rendered with heavy brushwork and a subdued, almost brooding palette—ochres, browns, and deep greens dominate the scene. Light falls from the left, catching the rounded shoulders of the jars and casting long, soft shadows, which give the objects a sense of weight and presence.
Unlike the gleaming, abundant still lifes of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, van Gogh’s composition is sparse and honest, reflecting the modest life of rural Holland. The careful placement and the tactile quality of the paint suggest van Gogh’s fascination with the material world and his search for meaning in the ordinary. The precise provenance of Still Life with Jars is not fully documented, but it is typical of the works van Gogh produced during his Nuenen period, before his move to Antwerp in late 1885.
Many of these early paintings remained with his family, especially his brother Theo, who was van Gogh’s primary supporter and correspondent. Today, works from this period are prized for their insight into van Gogh’s development and his deep engagement with Dutch artistic traditions. Still Life with Jars stands as a testament to the artist’s beginnings, before the burst of color and light that would soon define his legacy.
