The house with the red roof — History & Facts
In the late 1880s, Paul Cézanne retreated to the countryside near Aix-en-Provence, painting the same landscape again and again in search of what he called "the underlying structure" of nature. The house with the red roof, created in 1887, stands out among these works for its bold geometry and the way it marks Cézanne’s move toward the radical simplification that would inspire the Cubists decades later. This painting is one of several views of the same motif, but here the red roof cuts sharply through the greenery, a vivid anchor in a sea of shifting greens and blues. Cézanne chooses a moment of stillness, the house nestled amid thick trees, its roof blazing against the sky.
There are no figures, no narrative action—only the steady pulse of the landscape itself. The brushstrokes are deliberate, each patch of color built up like masonry, echoing the solidity of the house. The foliage is rendered in broad, faceted strokes, suggesting leaves without describing them, while the sky is a cool, receding plane.
Unlike the precise, atmospheric scenes of Claude Monet, Cézanne’s approach here is analytical: the forms are pared down, the composition almost architectural in its balance. The exact early history of The house with the red roof is not fully documented, as was often the case with Cézanne’s landscapes, many of which remained in his studio until his death in 1906. It is known that Cézanne painted this work during a period of intense experimentation, laying the groundwork for his later, more abstracted style. Today, the painting is celebrated as a key example of Cézanne’s mature period, when he was less concerned with pleasing critics or patrons than with pursuing his own vision.
Its journey from the artist’s easel to the museum wall mirrors the slow recognition of Cézanne’s genius: once dismissed as eccentric, now seen as a cornerstone of modern art.
