The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen — History & Facts
A solitary woman in dark clothing stands on a narrow path that cuts through the center of a walled garden, her figure turned slightly as if pausing mid-walk. The garden is divided into rectangular plots bordered by low wooden fences and sparse, leafless shrubs, with tufts of new grass and early spring growth appearing in patches. To the left, a large bare tree anchors the foreground, its trunk and branches rendered with thick, textured brushstrokes that contrast with the smoother, more distant forms.
Beyond the garden wall, rows of slender trees extend across the horizon, their silhouettes softened by a hazy, overcast light that fills the scene with a subdued, introspective mood. The palette is dominated by earthy greens, browns, and greys, with subtle touches of red in the shrubs and hints of green in the new foliage, suggesting the transition from winter to spring. The composition stretches unusually wide, emphasizing the horizontal expanse of the garden and the enclosure of the space by its high stone wall.
Brushwork varies from the rough, expressive marks in the foreground to finer, more delicate touches in the distant trees and sky, revealing the artist’s close observation of nature’s textures. The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen was painted by Vincent van Gogh in May 1884, during his stay with his parents at the parsonage in Nuenen. The painting captures the garden in spring, as noted in its alternative titles and in Van Gogh’s own letters describing the transformation of the winter garden into a spring scene. The Groninger Museum held the work from 1962 until 2020, when it was stolen during an exhibition at the Singer Laren museum and later recovered in 2023.
