The Thames from the Terrace of Somerset House, Looking toward St. Paul's — History & Facts

A broad sweep of the River Thames fills the centre of the composition, its surface animated by numerous boats and figures engaged in rowing and conversation. On the left, a tree with dense green foliage rises above the red-brick buildings of Somerset House, its branches casting soft shadows across the terrace below. Several figures stroll along the balustraded terrace in the foreground, including two women in pale dresses and bonnets who pause near the steps, while a child stands close by.

The stone steps descend to the riverbank, where more figures gather near moored boats, some preparing to embark or unload goods. The city stretches across the horizon, a dense cluster of rooftops and slender church spires, with the dome of St Paul's Cathedral rising prominently at the centre, bathed in clear daylight. The sky occupies nearly half the canvas, painted in subtle gradations of blue and pale pink, with delicate wisps of cloud drifting across the upper right.

The paint surface is finely worked, with precise lines for architectural details and smooth, almost invisible brushstrokes in the sky and water, lending a sense of calm clarity to the scene. Small touches of red, yellow, and blue in the figures’ clothing and the boats add points of colour to the predominantly cool palette. The composition is carefully balanced, with the terrace and tree anchoring the left side, the river opening out to the right, and the city skyline forming a horizontal band just above the centre.

Every detail, from the rigging of the boats to the windows of distant houses, is rendered with meticulous attention. Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, painted The Thames from the Terrace of Somerset House, Looking toward St. Paul's in the 1750s. The view is taken from the terrace of Somerset House, looking across the Thames toward the City of London and the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.

This work belongs to the veduta genre, which focuses on detailed city views and landscapes. The painting depicts a celebrated London panorama, with the Thames bustling with river traffic and the architectural landmarks of the city clearly visible.
