Two Women at a Window — History & Facts

A young woman leans on a wooden windowsill, her chin resting on her hand as she gazes outward with a slight, knowing smile. Her bare arms are folded, and her white blouse, gathered at the shoulders and accented with a red ribbon at the neckline, stands out against the darkness behind her. Her brown hair is parted in the center and falls loosely to her shoulders, with small red bows tucked at either side.

She holds a white cloth to her mouth, her eyes peering out with a mixture of amusement and reserve. The open wooden shutter frames the left side of the scene, its surface painted with visible brushstrokes that suggest the grain of the wood. Both figures are illuminated by a soft, golden light that falls across their faces and arms, leaving the background in deep shadow.

The composition is tightly focused, with the two women pressed close to the picture plane, creating an intimate sense of immediacy. The contrast between the bright, creamy whites of their clothing and the dark void behind them heightens the sense of depth and drama. Small details, such as the delicate folds of the cloth and the subtle blush on the younger woman's cheeks, reveal the artist's careful observation.

The older woman's head is wrapped in a white scarf, which blends into the dark background except where it catches the light along its folds. Her left hand grips the edge of the wooden shutter, with her knuckles and fingers clearly defined against the panel. The window frame is rendered in warm brown tones, with the grain of the wood visible along the top and right edges.

The lower left corner of the painting shows a darker section of the windowsill, contrasting with the lighter, illuminated skin of the women's arms. The background is an uninterrupted, deep black, with no visible objects or architectural details behind the figures. The paint handling is smooth on the faces and arms, while the brushwork on the shutter and window frame is looser, emphasizing texture and depth. Two Women at a Window was painted by Bartolomé Estebán Murillo in 1670.
