View of the Asylum and Chapel of Saint-Rémy — History & Facts
A wide, furrowed field stretches across the foreground, its soil rendered with vigorous, swirling strokes of blue, ochre, and green. Beyond the field rises the pale, angular mass of the asylum and chapel at Saint-Rémy, their Romanesque tower and clustered rooftops picked out in cool blues and greys. Two tall trees with golden, windblown foliage stand just right of center, their trunks and branches outlined in blue, their leaves painted with short, energetic dashes.
To the right, a haystack sits beside a small building, its yellow tones echoing the trees and contrasting with the otherwise cool palette. The sky is alive with rhythmic, horizontal strokes of green, blue, and touches of pink, suggesting restless movement and late autumn light. The entire composition is built from expressive, directional brushwork, with thick, visible paint lending a sense of texture and immediacy to every surface.
No figures appear in the scene, heightening the sense of solitude around the buildings and fields. A cluster of dark green bushes runs horizontally along the base of the buildings, separating the field from the structures. In the upper left corner, a single tree with a dark, rounded canopy stands apart from the others, its trunk painted with thick, dark lines.
The lower left edge of the painting is dominated by diagonal strokes of blue and ochre, creating a sense of movement and depth at the margin of the field. The sky’s swirling brushwork is interspersed with small, pinkish marks, adding a sense of vibrancy and variation to the cool tones above. Vincent van Gogh painted View of the Asylum and Chapel of Saint-Rémy in October 1889 during his stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
