Avenue of Plane Trees near Arles Station — History & Facts

A row of tall plane trees dominates the foreground, their trunks painted in vivid yellows and ochres that catch the sunlight streaming from the left. The trees stretch upward and outward, their bare branches weaving a complex network against a sky streaked with blue, pink, and pale orange. Between the trunks, a patch of green grass is scattered with white and yellow flowers, while the earth beneath is rendered in energetic strokes of yellow, lavender, and brown.

The ground is animated by diagonal lines and dashes, giving a sense of movement and texture to the sunlit avenue. In the middle distance, a low wall runs horizontally across the picture, separating the avenue from a row of dark-roofed buildings and the distant station. Two small, dark silhouettes of figures appear near the left edge, walking along the path beside the wall, their forms reduced to simple shapes.

To the right, the trunks overlap and crowd together, their shadows falling in sharp, angular patterns across the grass and path. The brushwork is bold and directional, with thick, visible strokes that follow the forms of trees and ground, creating a lively surface. The palette is dominated by yellows, greens, and blues, with accents of orange and violet, lending the scene a sense of warmth and early spring light.

A small patch of blue appears at the lower left edge, contrasting with the dominant yellows and greens of the ground. Near the lower right corner, a section of the wall is interrupted by a diagonal wooden beam or fence, painted in pale brown and white. The upper right corner features a cluster of dark vertical lines that suggest telegraph poles or wires against the sky.

Sunlight falls most strongly on the lower right side of the tree trunks, leaving the left sides in cooler shadow tones of lavender and blue. The background buildings are painted in flat, blocky shapes with deep blue and purple roofs, and their windows are indicated by quick, dark horizontal strokes. Vincent van Gogh painted Avenue of Plane Trees near Arles Station in Arles in March 1888. The Musée Rodin is listed as the source for this painting, under inventory P.07303.
