Christmas Gift Table for a Girl — History & Facts
A table covered with an array of gifts and festive items is the central subject of Christmas Gift Table for a Girl, created by an unknown artist in 1840. The composition features a large doll dressed in red at the back of the table, surrounded by objects including apples in a wooden bowl, a teapot, dishes, a toy kitchen set, a bonnet with pink ribbons, yellow shoes, and lace-trimmed textiles. To the right, a small Christmas tree is decorated with hanging pastries, a jug, and a blue and yellow hat.
The scene is rendered in a careful, detailed style, with a focus on the textures and surfaces of the objects, set against a plain background that emphasizes the abundance of gifts. This work belongs to a tradition of still-life and genre scenes that depict holiday customs and domestic interiors in nineteenth-century Europe. Gift tables such as this were a common feature of Christmas celebrations in German-speaking regions, where children received presents arranged in elaborate displays. The painting is dated 1840 and is now held in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum.
The artist's identity and the original context of commission are not documented.
