Helena Fourment in Her Wedding Dress — History & Facts
A young woman sits at the center of the composition, her body turned slightly to her left while her gaze meets the viewer directly. She wears an elaborate gown with a shimmering gold-patterned skirt and a black velvet overdress, its heavy folds rendered with loose, textured brushwork. Her bodice is adorned with a large, intricate gold brooch and a double strand of pearls, which catch the light at her chest and neck.
A delicate lace collar frames her face, its crisp white edge contrasting with the darker tones of her dress and the deep red curtain that sweeps behind her. Her sleeves are voluminous, with transparent fabric gathered at the elbows and wrists, where lace cuffs emerge from beneath the black velvet. She rests her right hand on the arm of a red-upholstered chair, while her left hand, adorned with a ring, lies gently in her lap.
A sprig of greenery is tucked into her curly blond hair, which is softly illuminated by the light falling from the left. Behind her, a stone balustrade and column suggest an outdoor terrace, with a blue sky and clouds visible through the opening. A richly patterned carpet covers the floor, its reds and golds echoing the tones of her gown and the drapery above.
The artist uses energetic, visible brushstrokes in the textiles and background, while the face and hands are modeled with smooth transitions and subtle color. The composition frames the sitter with architectural elements and a heavy curtain, focusing attention on her presence and attire. The work dates from between circa 1630 and circa 1631.
