Justice — History & Facts
A crowned female figure sits enthroned on swirling clouds at the center of the composition, her body turned slightly to the left as she raises a sword in her right hand. Her left arm extends outward, and her hand holds a set of scales, one pan hanging lower than the other. The main figure wears a flowing robe of muted violet and rose, with deep folds and subtle modeling that suggest the weight and movement of the fabric.
Her face is calm and slightly downcast, framed by softly curling hair and a simple crown, her features rendered with gentle shading. The composition is circular, with the main figure anchoring the center and each putto arranged symmetrically around her, balancing the scene. Light falls evenly across the figures, highlighting the smooth forms and casting gentle shadows in the folds of drapery and the contours of limbs.
The careful gradation of color and tone, especially in the robes and flesh, creates a sense of three-dimensionality within the shallow space. A third putto sits at the lower left, draped in a reddish cloth that wraps around his back and trails down onto the clouds. In the lower right, a fourth putto sits on a rocky outcrop, his left hand resting on the stone and his body partially turned outward.
The paint application is smooth with delicate transitions between light and shadow, and the outlines of the figures are softly blended rather than sharply defined. This ceiling tondo, titled Justice, was painted by Raphael in 1508. The subject is allegorical, belonging to the genre of religious art as identified in museum records. Justice is associated with the High Renaissance movement.
