Léopold Zborowksi — History & Facts
In 1919, Amedeo Modigliani painted his close friend and dealer, Léopold Zborowski, at a moment when both men were struggling to survive in postwar Paris. Zborowski was not just Modigliani’s agent; he was his lifeline, providing the artist with money, materials, and a place to work when few others would. This portrait stands out as one of the most personal in Modigliani’s late career, capturing the man who, as Modigliani once wrote, “believed in me when no one else would.” The painting is part of a small group of portraits of Zborowski, but this one, created just a year before Modigliani’s death, is often considered the most intimate. Zborowski sits upright, hands folded in his lap, his elongated face and almond eyes rendered in Modigliani’s unmistakable style.
The sitter’s pose is formal, yet his expression is gentle, almost resigned, hinting at the fatigue and quiet dignity of a man carrying both his own burdens and those of his friend. The background is muted, drawing all attention to Zborowski’s face, while the simplified forms and subtle palette recall the influence of African sculpture and Italian Renaissance portraiture that Modigliani admired. Unlike the grand, psychological portraits of Cézanne or the flamboyant depictions of dealers by Picasso, Modigliani’s approach is pared down, focusing on the inner life rather than outward status. The exact medium of this portrait is uncertain, though Modigliani most often worked in oil on canvas during this period.
After its creation, the painting remained with Zborowski and later passed through several hands as Modigliani’s reputation grew after his early death in 1920. Today, Léopold Zborowksi is held in a major public collection, a testament to both the enduring bond between artist and sitter and to Modigliani’s unique position at the crossroads of Modernism and tradition. The portrait is now recognized as a key work from the artist’s final years, marking the close of a short, brilliant, and tumultuous career.
