Lot and his Daughters — History & Facts
A bearded, muscular man sits at the left, draped in a brown cloth, his body turned toward two young women who flank him on either side. One daughter, clothed in blue, leans in close to the man, her hand gently touching his as she gazes at his face, her expression intent and intimate. To the right, the second daughter kneels nude on a red drapery, holding a tray laden with bread, grapes, and a jug, as she pours wine into a cup held by the man.
The figures are arranged tightly in the foreground, their limbs overlapping and their bodies illuminated by a warm, golden light that highlights the flesh tones and creates a dramatic contrast with the deep shadows behind them. A rich, red curtain sweeps across the upper background, its folds painted with energetic, sweeping brushstrokes that echo the curves of the figures below. The setting is ambiguous, with only a hint of rocky ground and drapery to suggest an interior or a tent, focusing attention on the interaction between the three figures.
Rubens uses strong, fluid brushwork to model the forms, especially in the rendering of flesh, where subtle gradations of color create a sense of volume and softness. The composition draws the viewer’s gaze in a circular motion from the man’s powerful torso to the blue-gowned daughter, and then to the nude daughter’s outstretched arm and the tray she offers. Small details, such as the glistening grapes, the metallic sheen of the jug, and the patterned fabric draped over the man’s legs, reveal Rubens’s attention to texture and material. Lot and his Daughters was painted by Peter Paul Rubens between circa 1613 and circa 1614.
The subject is drawn from a religious narrative, depicting Lot and his daughters in a moment associated with alcohol intoxication. The scene shows Lot being offered wine by his daughters, a detail reinforced by the presence of the jug and grapes. This work is classified as religious art and was once part of the Charles Sedelmeyer collection.
