Saint Martin and the Beggar — History & Facts
A richly dressed figure in elaborate golden armor sits astride a large white horse at the center of the scene. His pale, elongated face is turned gently toward a nearly naked man standing at his left, who looks up at him with an expression of hope or gratitude. The armored rider holds a sword in his right hand and uses it to cut a swath from his vivid green cloak, which drapes over his lap and falls toward the beggar.
The beggar’s body is thin and muscular, his skin painted in cool, luminous tones that contrast with the warmth of the rider’s ornate costume. He clutches the green fabric, his left leg bandaged just below the knee, his feet bare on the rocky ground. The white horse stands calmly, its head turned slightly to the right, with finely modeled muscles and a flowing mane that catches the light.
Behind the two figures, a dramatic sky swirls with clouds painted in broad, energetic strokes of blue, white, and grey. The composition is vertical and tightly focused, with the figures dominating the foreground and the horse’s strong diagonal stance anchoring the scene. Light falls from the left, illuminating the faces, armor, and horse, while casting subtle shadows that model the forms and add depth.
The artist uses sweeping, expressive brushwork, especially in the clouds and landscape, while the figures are outlined with fluid, sinuous lines. Touches of red in the rider’s breeches and the beggar’s lips add accents to the otherwise cool palette of blues, greens, and whites.
