Salvator Mundi — History & Facts
In Salvator Mundi, Leonardo da Vinci presents a striking portrait of Christ. The figure is depicted with long hair and a beard, wearing a blue robe with a red undergarment. Christ holds a transparent crystal orb in his left hand, symbolizing his role as the savior of the world.
The background is dark, which enhances the luminosity of the figure and the orb. This painting is executed in oil on walnut panel, showcasing da Vinci's skill in creating lifelike textures and details. The use of sfumato, a technique that allows for soft transitions between colors, is evident in the rendering of Christ's face. The dimensions of the work are approximately 65 x 45 cm, making it a relatively small portrait.
The painting's condition has been a subject of extensive restoration efforts. Salvator Mundi is believed to have been painted around 1500, during the height of the Renaissance. This work is notable for its historical significance, as it was lost for many years before being rediscovered and authenticated. An interesting fact about this painting is that it became the most expensive painting ever sold at auction, fetching over $450 million in 2017.
This sale highlights the enduring fascination with da Vinci's work and the value placed on Renaissance art.
