Santa Maria della Salute and Riva degli Schiavoni, Venice — History & Facts
The church’s pale stone glows in the sunlight, its architectural details crisply defined, while statues line the roof and upper balustrades, casting delicate shadows on the masonry below. Descending from the church, a series of wide steps leads to a paved square where small groups of figures converse or stroll, their garments rendered in subtle tones of brown, green, and ochre. To the left, the canal is alive with gondolas and boats, their dark hulls and angled oarsmen animated by the play of light on the rippling water.
Some gondoliers stand upright, steering with long poles, while others sit or gesture to their passengers, each figure distinct yet integrated into the busy scene. The city’s skyline recedes into a haze of ochre and pink, punctuated by slender campanili and the faint outlines of domes and towers. Above, a vast expanse of sky occupies nearly half the canvas, painted in soft gradations of blue and cream, with a few billowing clouds catching the afternoon light.
The composition is carefully balanced, with the architectural mass of the Salute anchoring the right, while the canal and cityscape open out to the left, drawing the gaze into the depth of Venice. Fine, precise brushwork defines the buildings and figures, while looser strokes and subtle color modulations evoke the shimmer of water and atmosphere. Small details abound: the reflections of boats in the canal, the shadows cast by balustrades, and the lively gestures of people gathered on the steps and quayside. Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, created Santa Maria della Salute and Riva degli Schiavoni, Venice in the 1730s.
The painting dates from between circa 1736 and circa 1738. Its subject is Venice, with a focus on the iconic church of Santa Maria della Salute and the bustling waterfront of the Riva degli Schiavoni.
