Study of a Model — History & Facts
Few works in the history of French Romanticism are as closely tied to a real human tragedy as Study of a Model, which Théodore Géricault painted in 1818 while preparing for his monumental The Raft of the Medusa. To achieve the raw realism he sought, Géricault visited Paris morgues and hospitals, sketching the bodies of the dead and dying. This study is believed to be one of several he made directly from cadavers, a practice that shocked his contemporaries but was essential to his vision of modern history painting.
Géricault’s relentless pursuit of truth in the human form marked a radical departure from the idealized bodies of Neoclassicism. The work captures a single, unflinching moment: a male nude, lifeless or in deep repose, sprawled across a simple support. His limbs are heavy, his flesh rendered with a starkness that suggests both vulnerability and dignity. The light falls harshly on the body, accentuating the pallor of the skin and the stillness of death, while the background remains shadowed and indistinct.
Unlike the heroic nudes of Jacques-Louis David, Géricault’s study refuses idealization, instead confronting the viewer with the reality of mortality. The model’s limp hand and slack jaw speak more eloquently of suffering and loss than any grand narrative. As a working study, the piece was never meant for public display, but rather as a tool for Géricault’s ambitious project. Its medium is uncertain—possibly oil, possibly chalk or graphite on paper—a testament to the experimental nature of his process at this time.
After Géricault’s early death in 1824, many of his studies were dispersed, some entering private collections, others lost. Today, Study of a Model is recognized as a crucial step in the making of The Raft of the Medusa, and stands as a witness to the artist’s uncompromising dedication to observation. Its survival offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the working methods of one of Romanticism’s most restless innovators.
