The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian — History & Facts
A young man stands bound to a tree at the centre of the scene, his pale body illuminated against a dark background of foliage and sky. A cloth is wrapped loosely around his waist, leaving the rest of his body exposed. A third figure, partially obscured and wearing a broad-brimmed hat, crouches low at the left edge of the composition.
A broad-leaved tree rises behind the central figure, its trunk and branches forming a dark silhouette against the blue sky. The composition is tightly arranged, with the figures grouped closely around the martyr, focusing attention on his exposed form and the drama of the moment. The brushwork is loose and energetic, especially in the rendering of flesh, hair, and drapery, giving a sense of movement and immediacy to the scene.
Touches of red in the garments and the earthy tones of the background contrast with the cool whites and blues, creating a dynamic color balance. A brown dog with a white snout stands at the lower left corner, its head turned upward toward the central figure. A metallic shield or vessel lies on the ground behind the dog, reflecting light and adding a silvery highlight to the lower left area.
To the right of the central figure, an older man with gray hair and a muscular, bare torso bends forward, gripping a rope or cord. Behind this older man, another figure with a reddish beard and tousled hair wears a garment with a deep red sleeve and looks intently at the bound man. In the upper right, a white horse and a mounted soldier in armor are partly visible, the horse’s head and bridle emerging from the edge of the painting.
The background transitions from deep green foliage at the top left to a bright, cloudless blue sky behind the tree branches. The light falls most strongly on the central figure’s chest, arms, and legs, leaving the surrounding figures in partial shadow. Loose, expressive brushstrokes are visible in the rendering of the dog’s fur and the grassy ground, giving these areas a textured, unfinished quality.
A subtle diagonal line is created by the arrangement of the figures, leading from the crouching man at the left up through the central figure and toward the mounted soldier in the background. A dog, a broad-leaved tree, and several men surround the saint, elements identified in the museum's description.
