Waterloo Bridge, overcast weather — History & Facts

A broad stone bridge stretches horizontally across the centre of the composition, its arches reflected in the rippling water below. The river occupies the lower third of the scene, its surface rendered with loose, horizontal strokes of green, ochre, and pale blue that suggest movement and shifting light. Above the bridge, a hazy cityscape emerges through a veil of mist and smoke, with tall, vertical chimneys rising into a sky tinged with orange and lavender tones.

Clouds of smoke drift leftward from the chimneys, their soft, blurred edges blending into the overcast atmosphere. The arches of the bridge are dark and indistinct, while patches of light glimmer through them, echoed by shimmering highlights on the water’s surface. The sky dominates the upper half of the painting, filled with swirling, layered brushwork that creates a sense of dense, humid air.

The palette is restrained and cool, with blues, greys, and violets prevailing, punctuated by warm touches of peach and yellow near the horizon and in the water. The paint is applied in soft, overlapping strokes, giving the entire scene a vaporous, dreamlike quality. No figures appear on the bridge or along the riverbank, emphasizing the monumental presence of the structure and the enveloping atmosphere.

In the lower right corner, the artist’s signature and the date 1900 are clearly visible, anchoring the work in time. Faint green and ochre dabs along the top of the bridge hint at shrubbery or low vegetation. The upper right corner of the painting is dominated by a diffuse, peach-toned cloud that merges seamlessly with the sky.

In the lower left corner, the water is darker and more heavily brushed, with deeper greens and browns. The outlines of the bridge are softened by mist, with no sharp lines separating its structure from the surrounding haze. Subtle vertical strokes of blue and violet in the background suggest distant buildings or towers partially obscured by fog. Claude Monet completed Waterloo Bridge, overcast weather in 1900.
