British, 1867–1939
Arthur Rackham (1867–1939) was the leading English illustrator of the Edwardian "golden age" of book illustration. His atmospheric watercolours — gnarled trees with brooding faces, delicate fairies and shadowy goblins — brought to life classics such as Rip Van Winkle, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and Wagner's Ring cycle. Sold in his own lifetime as signed limited editions, his richly detailed plates remain among the most beloved and collectable in all of fantasy illustration.
