Jan Frans Van Bloemen

Flemish, 1662–1749

Jan Frans Van Bloemen was a Flemish painter, born on 15 January 1662 in Antwerp, Belgium, and died on 19 February 1749 in Rome, Italy. He is known for his landscape paintings, particularly those depicting Italian scenery, and is often associated with the genre of capriccio, which combines real and imaginary elements. Van Bloemen trained under his father, who was also a painter, and later became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. He moved to Italy in the late 17th century, where he became influenced by the works of Claude Lorrain and other Italian masters. His career flourished in Rome, where he gained recognition for his ability to blend classical architecture with natural landscapes. Major works include 'A View of Rome' and 'Landscape with a Waterfall.' Van Bloemen's style is characterized by a harmonious balance of light and shadow, vibrant colors, and meticulous attention to detail, which contributed to the development of landscape painting in the 18th century. He is considered a significant figure in the transition from Baroque to Rococo styles in landscape art.
