Jean-François Millet

French, 1814–1875

Jean-François Millet (1814–1875) was a French painter and a founder of the Barbizon school in rural France. He was known for his depictions of peasant farmers and was associated with the Realism movement. Millet grew up in a farming family in Normandy, and his familiarity with rural labor influenced his art. He worked in oil, pastels, Conté crayon, and etching, and later in his career focused more on landscapes.
