Polish, 1847–1914

Józef Chełmoński (1849–1914) was a Polish painter recognized for realistic depictions of landscapes, rural life, and genre scenes reflecting historical and social themes of the late Romantic era in partitioned Poland. Born in Boczki, he studied in Warsaw and Munich before working in Paris, where his art attracted attention for its distinctive subject matter. Chełmoński later settled in Mazovia, creating many of his works in relative isolation. His paintings are held in major museums in Poland and abroad, and his career is associated with the Munich-Warsaw group of the late positivism.
