Paul Cézanne

French, 1839–1906

Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work bridged late 19th-century Impressionism and early 20th-century Cubism. Born in Aix-en-Provence, he was the son of a banker, which gave him financial security. Cézanne developed a distinctive style using planes of color and repetitive brushstrokes, focusing on the structure and form of objects. His paintings were initially misunderstood, but a solo exhibition in 1895 led to wider recognition and influence on later artists.
