English, 1744–1797
William Hodges (1744–1797) was an English painter who joined James Cook's second Pacific voyage as the expedition artist from 1772 to 1775. He created sketches and paintings of places visited during the journey, such as locations in the South Pacific and Antarctic regions, and later completed large landscape oils in London. Hodges also traveled to India, producing works based on his observations of cities and riverbank scenes, and published an illustrated book about his travels. His career ended after a politically controversial exhibition in London was closed by royal order.
