Beach at Scheveningen in Calm Weather — History & Facts

Below the horizon, choppy waves roll toward the shore in thick, textured strokes of white and ochre, their crests catching the light. A single fishing boat, its mast topped by a small red flag, floats in the shallow water near the center of the scene, its hull dark against the foaming surf. To the right, several men and a horse-drawn cart stand near the water’s edge, the cart’s wheels and the figures rendered in quick, energetic lines.

The sandy foreground is streaked with green tufts of grass, painted in swift, directional marks that echo the movement of the wind across the dunes. The paint is applied with visible, expressive brushstrokes, especially in the waves and sky, lending the scene a sense of immediacy and changing weather. Touches of red in the boat’s flag and in the skirts of some figures provide small but vivid accents within the otherwise muted palette.

A single bird is visible flying low over the water near the center left of the painting, its form suggested by a few dark strokes above the waves. The upper left and right corners of the painting are dominated by heavy, swirling clouds painted in thick, layered greys and blues, giving the sky a turbulent appearance. A faint reflection of the fishing boat and its mast can be seen in the wet sand and shallow water beneath it, rendered in thin, vertical lines of white and brown.

In the far right background, a small, indistinct figure stands alone near the edge of the surf, set apart from the main group by a patch of lighter sand. The foreground dune is marked by scattered, angular strokes of green and brown, with the paint dragged in different directions to suggest the rough texture of grass and sand. The Sotheby’s catalogue lists this painting as lot 139 in their New York sale of 14 November 2022.
