Coronation of Maria — History & Facts
A woman kneels at the center, her hands crossed over her chest and her gaze lifted upward, as two male figures place a crown upon her head. The man on the left, bare-chested and draped in a dark cloth, extends both arms to hold the crown, while the older man on the right, with flowing white hair and beard, assists with the coronation and rests one hand on a large orb. Above the central group, a dove spreads its wings in a burst of light, surrounded by softly rendered angelic faces emerging from the clouds.
The woman’s voluminous robe cascades in sweeping folds, painted with energetic, visible brushstrokes that give a sense of movement and texture to the fabric. At the bottom of the composition, three winged cherubs hover on clouds; one holds a bouquet of flowers aloft, while the others reach and gesture upwards in lively poses. The figures are arranged in a vertical axis, with the kneeling woman forming the base and the heavenly dove at the apex, uniting the scene through strong diagonal lines and overlapping forms.
Light falls from above, illuminating the faces and upper bodies of the main figures, while the background dissolves into swirling clouds and soft shadows. The composition is animated by contrasts of light and dark, with luminous flesh tones set against deep, shadowed drapery and atmospheric clouds. Every figure is rendered with a sense of volume and vitality, from the expressive faces to the dynamic gestures and the delicate curls of hair. Peter Paul Rubens creates this work in the 17th century, as listed in the museum’s records and the title line.
The museum’s description dates the work to 1633 and identifies it as part of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
