Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist — History & Facts

A pale, elongated Christ hangs from the cross at the center, his arms stretched wide and his head tilted downward in sorrow. Above his head, a plaque bears an inscription, and a white cloth is knotted around his waist. His body is modeled with dramatic highlights and deep shadows, the contours of his muscles and ribs rendered with expressive, visible brushwork.

To the left, the Virgin Mary stands cloaked in a voluminous blue mantle, her face turned upward in anguish, her hands clasped together in grief. Beside her, Saint John the Evangelist is depicted in a red and green robe, his youthful face filled with sorrow, one hand raised to his chest and the other gesturing outward in a gesture of despair. The background is a dark, stormy sky, with swirling clouds painted in loose, energetic strokes that heighten the sense of drama.

The entire scene is bathed in a supernatural light that falls most strongly on Christ’s body, setting it apart from the shadowy surroundings. The paint surface reveals loose, expressive handling, especially in the drapery and the clouds, with visible brushstrokes that create a sense of movement and emotional intensity. The composition is vertically oriented, with the cross dominating the space and the figures of Mary and John clustered closely at its base, emphasizing their emotional connection to the crucified Christ.

Small details, such as the wound in Christ’s foot and the subtle gestures of the mourners, add to the painting’s pathos. The color scheme is dominated by deep blues, reds, and earth tones, with the luminous flesh of Christ standing out against the dark background. The Philadelphia Museum of Art lists this painting under Cat. 809.
