Diana and Callisto — History & Facts
A group of women gathers at the edge of a woodland pool, their bodies arranged in a dynamic arc across the foreground. At the center, a nude figure reclines on the ground, her head turned upward in distress as two companions pull away her drapery, exposing her to the others. To the right, a commanding woman sits upright, her arm extended in a gesture of accusation, while several attendants cluster around her, some holding bows and arrows.
The figures are set against a landscape of trees and distant blue hills, with a dramatic sky that shifts from golden sunset to stormy clouds. A statue of a nude boy pouring water stands atop a fountain at the center back, its dark stone surface contrasting with the luminous flesh tones of the women below. On the lower right, a pair of hounds rest beside a heap of arrows and a quiver, their sleek bodies echoing the curves of the women nearby.
Titian uses loose, expressive brushwork, especially in the foliage and sky, while the figures are modeled with soft transitions of color and shadow. In the upper right corner, a golden cloth is draped from a tree branch, its folds catching the light and casting soft shadows on the figures below. Near the lower left edge, the water of the pool reflects the pale skin of the figures and the brownish tones of the earth.
On the far left, a tree with sparse, wind-blown branches stands against the sky, its trunk partially obscured by the group of women. The distant hills and blue sky in the background are painted with loose, horizontal strokes, blending into the dramatic clouds above. Diana's accusatory gesture and the shocked or intent expressions of the surrounding nymphs convey the drama of the revelation. The painting was completed between 1556 and 1559, during the artist's late career.
