Green Wheat Field — History & Facts
A wide field of green wheat dominates the foreground, its tall stalks bending and swirling in the wind. Patches of bright green, yellow-green, and deep emerald are painted with thick, energetic brushstrokes, giving the wheat a sense of movement and texture. Small, scattered accents of red and yellow appear among the grasses, standing out against the mass of green.
The field is bordered by a low, pale wall that runs horizontally across the middle of the composition, separating the wheat from a band of blue-green shrubbery and trees beyond. Beyond the wall, a line of rounded trees and bushes stretches from left to right, their shapes loosely defined by swirling strokes of blue, green, and grey. Above, the sky is filled with restless clouds, their forms rendered in sweeping strokes of white, blue, and hints of lilac, echoing the movement of the wheat below.
Light falls unevenly across the scene, with bright highlights catching the tops of the wheat and the slopes of the distant hills, while deeper shadows suggest the shifting weather. The entire surface is animated by the artist’s vigorous handling of paint, with visible ridges and directional marks that heighten the sense of energy and immediacy. The composition is arranged in horizontal bands, leading from the close-up detail of the wheat to the distant hills and sky, creating a deep sense of space.
No human figures are present, but the landscape feels alive with motion and changing light. Vincent van Gogh painted Green Wheat Field in July 1889, during his time in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The painting was once part of the Hermann Göring Collection and is now associated with Kunsthaus Zürich. The record from GalleriX lists the date as July 1889.
