Resurrection of Lazarus — History & Facts
A group of six figures gathers in the foreground, each one animated by a different gesture or expression. At the right, a bearded man in flowing robes stands with his right arm raised, his hand open in a commanding gesture, while his left hand points downward toward the central group. His gaze is fixed on the man at the far left, who sits up with wide eyes and parted lips, his bare chest exposed as he emerges from a shroud held by another figure.
A man with curly hair and a beard, standing behind the shrouded figure, pulls back the cloth with one hand and looks over his shoulder toward the central standing figure, his face tense with emotion. Between these two men, an older bearded figure leans forward, his brow furrowed and his hand raised as if in astonishment or awe. In the center foreground, a kneeling woman in dark drapery reaches out, her hand gently supporting the revived man’s arm, her face turned upward in a mixture of hope and disbelief.
Beside her, another woman, also kneeling, clasps her hands to her chest and looks upward, her mouth slightly open in wonder. Behind the group, a rocky outcrop and a tree with spreading branches frame the scene, while the sky above is filled with swirling clouds. Light pours in from the upper left, illuminating the faces and drapery of the figures, casting deep shadows that heighten the drama of the moment.
The composition draws all attention to the interaction between the standing man and the revived figure, with the other participants forming a semicircle around them. The brushwork is energetic and fluid, especially in the rendering of hair, fabric, and the folds of the shroud, lending a sense of movement to the scene. The figures are arranged in a tight cluster, their bodies overlapping and their gestures interlocking, creating a sense of urgency and emotional intensity. The painting is known as the Raising of Lazarus, created by Peter Paul Rubens in 1620.
Peter Paul Rubens was active in the early seventeenth century, and this painting belongs to the year 1620.
