Saint Augustin — History & Facts
In 1454, the city of Sansepolcro commissioned a grand altarpiece from Piero della Francesca, a rising star of the early Renaissance. The work was to adorn the church of Sant’Agostino, and from it, a series of saints emerged—each panel a testament to the city’s faith and pride. Saint Augustin is one of these panels, and its survival is remarkable: the original polyptych was later dismantled, its parts scattered across Europe.
Today, this fragment offers a rare glimpse into the ambitions of a small Tuscan town and the early genius of Piero. Saint Augustin stands in quiet grandeur, his bishop’s staff in hand, his gaze fixed in contemplation. Piero captures the saint not in the throes of conversion or controversy, but in a moment of serene authority—his elaborate cope glimmering with painted gold, his mitre delicately rendered. The heavy folds of his robe and the geometric clarity of his form recall the influence of Masaccio, yet Piero’s light is softer, suffusing the figure with a sense of intellectual calm.
The open book at Augustine’s feet hints at his legacy as a Doctor of the Church, while the richly patterned textiles speak to the wealth and taste of the panel’s patrons. The precise journey of Saint Augustin after its removal from Sansepolcro is not fully known, but its history is typical of many Renaissance altarpieces, which were often disassembled and sold as tastes and church interiors changed. Piero della Francesca himself was at the threshold of his mature style when he painted this panel, developing the mathematical approach to perspective that would define his later masterpieces. Today, the panel is prized for its rare combination of monumentality and restraint, a window into both the spiritual world of the 15th century and the evolving vision of one of Italy’s greatest painters.
